Why a main road may be plowed again

The city’s first-priority network is about 350 km of strategic arterial and collector roads, including transit routes, school zones and main hillside access. Second priority is about 170 km of remaining arterial, hillside and collector routes. Third priority is about 390 km, mostly local roads.

First-priority roads are maintained until conditions are controlled, then crews move to the next categories. If another snowfall starts before local roads are finished, the city returns to first and second priority routes. This explains repeated main-road passes without promising a fixed clearing time for every street.

Your sidewalk, driveway and parked vehicle

Clear snow and ice from sidewalks and footpaths around the property within 24 hours. Private driveways and their snow are also the resident’s responsibility. Put shoveled snow on the yard, not into public roads or sidewalks.

Avoid street parking during snow. Abandoned or obstructing vehicles can be towed without notice, at the owner’s cost. Keep storm drains and gutters clear to help meltwater drain. Arrange a neighbour or service before a storm if you cannot shovel yourself.

Road boundaries and service reports

Highway 1, Highway 11 and Mount Lehman Road south of Highway 1 toward the airport are provincial responsibilities. The city clears associated roundabouts and arterial streets but not highway surfaces or ramps. The named provincial contractor number is 1-800-667-5122.

Report city clearing concerns through the City app, online service request or 604-853-5485. The after-hours emergency number is 604-864-5552. Road-camera and pavement-sensor information is updated about every five minutes; a camera view is not a guarantee that an entire route is clear.
